My doctor said my blood sugar numbers were a concern. Here's what I did before agreeing to medication.

I was 47 when my doctor pulled up my lab results, paused, and told me my blood sugar numbers weren't where they should be.

For a second I just sat there. I wasn't shocked, exactly — I'd been tired for years, gained weight I couldn't lose no matter what I tried, and most mornings I woke up already foggy, like my brain just refused to fully switch on. and my afternoons always ended the same way: crashed on the couch by 2pm. But hearing it confirmed on paper was different. It made it real.

My doctor mentioned starting a prescription. I asked for three months to try something on my own first. She agreed, a little reluctantly, and told me to come back for another check-up.

"I'd tried cutting carbs. I'd tried walking after dinner. I'd tried just about everything you read online. Nothing stuck — because I was treating the symptom, not what was actually going on underneath."

What I didn't understand back then is that cutting sugar and actually supporting healthy blood sugar are two completely different things. I was doing the first. I had never done the second, , which was fixing the root cause.

If any of this sounds familiar...

You're tired by mid-afternoon, every single day, no matter how much you sleep.

You've tried cutting carbs, walking more, even fasting — and the number on the scale barely moves.

Brain fog that makes even simple tasks feel harder than they should.

Sugar cravings hit out of nowhere and feel impossible to talk yourself out of.

You're a little afraid of what your next check-up is going to say.

It isn't a willpower problem. For most people, it never was.

What I found out, almost by accident

A friend who'd gotten her own blood sugar back on track mentioned a daily habit she'd added — not a diet, not a workout plan. Just a simple morning routine built around plant-based ingredients that support healthy glucose metabolism directly, rather than just restricting what she ate.

Most people never hear this, she said: if insulin resistance is not addressed, Type 2 diabetes typically worsens over time.

She also told me how much better she had started feeling, and honestly, I was curious. I had already tried so many things without lasting results, so I decided to try the same simple routine she was using.

That's what sent me looking into this.

Why it made sense to me

It's not about cutting more.

It's about supporting more.

Cutting sugar reduces what goes onto your plate. Supporting your blood sugar is about how your body actually processes it once it's already in your bloodstream. Most advice only ever covers the first part — which is probably why so much of what I'd tried before never stuck.

90 days later

What changed

I went back for that follow-up check-up. My numbers had come down. No medication. My doctor's exact words: "Whatever you're doing — keep doing it."
